Enlightening Health|Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine
We humbly welcome you to “Enlightening Health” and hope you will continue to be a regular visitor to our website! Yes, there are numerous websites and other media dealing with issues that affect our health and well-being, however most offer only one side of an issue. It is the intent of our website to encourage discussion of daily issues presented in our chat forum in such a manner that will offer varying aspects of a given topic and in turn foster understanding and respect for your opinions.
Those of us who have been on this earth for over 60 some years can see that there is something to be said about “life being a lot simpler way back when.” We ate foods that weren’t highly processed and didn’t contain inordinate amounts of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, pesticides, herbicides, or hormones. Heart disease, cancer and diabetes were all but unheard of and “miracle drugs” didn’t exist. Concerns about the cleaning products we used in our homes were unheard of. Kids were rarely obese because they were outside everyday playing for hours; riding their bikes, climbing trees, playing baseball in the neighborhood sandlot, only returning home for meals or at bedtime.
There have been remarkable advances in our standard of living and life expectancy; however, this has come at a cost to our society. A lot of the foods we eat are laden with fat, sugar, preservatives and pesticides, one or more which have been directly linked to the rising levels of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Many of our “miracle drugs” taken either alone, in combination with other drugs, or with some supplements can produce adverse side effects including death. Despite the ongoing efforts of the FDA to guard against the side effects of drugs, the problems still exist.
Michele Obama has initiated a campaign to reduce the alarming rise in childhood obesity. Many of our young people don’t get the exercise they need, but instead are spending hours in front of TV’s and computer screens. And, due to funding cuts, many schools are unable to offer physical education to their students. Add to that diets filled with fat and sugar laden foods, which are consumed freely by our young people, it's no wonder that current statistics show that 30-40% are obese.
Apart from disease, these are things that we can do something about that affect our health. This site will offer a look at these and seek your comments. On the left are topics we have thus far with more to come.
In good health,
